What makes a gun restricted

Licence applicants have to pass multiple tests to complete the Safety Course. Applicants must provide information on their mental health, employment and marital status when getting or renewing a licence. Once you get a licence, you are subject to continuous screening for criminal behaviour. The RCMP only accept a handful of reasons for owning a restricted gun, including target shooting and collection. Once you have a licence to possess a restricted gun, you can get authorization to carry the gun outside of locations it is licensed for if you can prove to officials that you use it as part of your profession, or that you need it to protect your own life or the lives of others.

The RCMP has rules for storing even non-restricted guns safely. Owners of non-restricted guns must put a lock on the gun or remove the bolt, so it cannot be fired, or else keep the gun locked in a container or room that is difficult to break into.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. An earlier version erroneously said licences are not required for non-restricted guns. Also, an earlier version incorrectly suggested all gun owners must put a lock on the gun or remove the bolt as well as keep it locked in an area difficult to break into. People at a Remembrance Day event at Kelowna's City Park became outraged when anti-vaxxers set up a microphone and disrupted the event.

It was supposed to be an invite-only event, but that didn't keep hundreds from showing up for the Remembrance Day ceremony at Vancouver's Victory Square. Remembrance Day is a day of reflection and gratitude as people across the country pay tribute to veterans from past and present. It's a heartbreaking reality: Hundreds of veterans across Canada don't have a place to call home, including dozens who live in Metro Vancouver.
