Through history it has been an Iron age fort, a Roman bath house and a Saxon cemetery. These evergreen broadleaf trees are usually found in the Mediterranean. They were planted in the 19th century by David Lyon, who bought Goring Hall estate in The avenue formed the centrepiece of the Goring Hall estate and once had large and ornate wrought-iron gates at either end. It was painted by local artist Gary Bevans and finished in having taken five and a half years to complete.
Bevans began the work when he was 33, the same age Michelangelo was when he started painting the Sistine Chapel. Nearby Castle Goring is a grade 1 listed building. The local Catholic Church has a remarkable painting by Gary Bevans. There is a public boat ramp and is popular for watersports particularly kitesurfing. The grassy area above the sea wall is ideal for ball games, picnics and family barbecues.
The blue flag waters and clean beaches offer traditional family holidays along with the nearby resorts of Brighton , Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. Fishing, windsurfing, surfboarding, kitesurfing and a host of other watersports are all enjoyed in the area. Summer festivals are popular and include the local Bowls Festival and the well-attended Chichester Show. Goring-by-Sea has a local railway station which makes it easy to reach Brighton to the east and Portsmouth to the west, where you can visit Portsmouth Historic Naval Dockyard.
Those who enjoy a day at the races will find Goodwood , Fontwell Park and Brighton racecourses are all within easy reach. Golf courses are also plentiful in the area. Walkers will enjoy the rolling hills and scenery of the South Downs Way.
