When was ocean terminal built

The sculptures and internal mosaics were inspired by nautical and marine themes. There had been a fibreglass galleon on the NE approach to the complex on the Durmarine building, but it is now removed. The galleon was undertaken by Janusz Warunkiewicz who was both principal architect and co-ordinator of the building's art installations. On the NW facade of the Ocean terminal building is a large sculptural motif raised over a mosaic backdrop, both undertaken by John Hooper.

The northern public arrival hall included extensive mosaic works. The building served the purpose of an ocean terminal for less than fifteen years. In it was repurposed as offices for Transnet staff.

A mezzanine level was introduced into the arrivals hall volume in a sympathetic configuration. A central double volume passage, allows the character of the original structure to remain visible to ceiling level. Office mezzanine decks were held short of the SE facade, maintaining the character of the multi volume wharf facing glazed facade.

This will create the required additional capacity for future demand. In addition to this, the space that is currently used by TNPA personnel for parking will also become available to be used as automotive storage. For the past 20 years, the Ocean Terminal Complex has been used primarily for port related activities.

As highlighted in the heritage practitioners report, the complex rated low on environmental, historical and cultural significance. It is not envisaged that the general public will have access to the complex in the future due to the port expansion and strict port security regulations. The grading report rated the complex high for architectural significance and structural value.

The only building in the complex that is proposed to be demolished is OTB which is required for increase in cargo handling space. Durmarine, L-Shed, M-shed and the south stair will remain intact. The need for additional space is further necessitated by the relocation of the auto terminal to create additional footprint for containerised cargo as proposed in the port master plan. The plan will enhance the attractiveness of the Port of Durban to shipping lines and establish the port as a hub port that will not only serve South Africa, but to service also SADC and the Southern Hemisphere.

The multiplier effect of this plan is its contribution to the socio economic transformation imperatives through local supplier development, job creation and community upliftment to areas surrounding the port. With guidance from Amafa, TNPA shall restore the artwork and sculpture, and relocate these to a site identified by Amafa. With respect to the grading report, which grades the OTB Complex as Grade IIIA, it must be noted that this building is currently not listed by the municipality as a building of local significance in the municipal Town Planning Scheme.

Having purchased the shopping centre in March last year, Ambassador Group said it has used insights gained over the past eighteen months to advance plans to turn Ocean Terminal into a gateway to the waterfront for the local community, adding to the wider regeneration of Leith.

In a newly submitted pre-application notice with the City of Edinburgh Council , the new masterplan for the site includes a new mixed-use space that maximises the location and aspect on to the Firth of Forth, created at a new linked entrance to the centre. The final stage of the masterplan is to introduce a mix of much-needed housing on the waterfront, integrating with the trams to Newhaven extension and new local amenities, to add to the vibrancy of the local community and the sustainability of the local economy.
