Hmmm thinking what I can do now, I thought sanding and then painting it would look allright? Please do not sand it down. How old is the property? I am an administrator for some asbestos surveyors and it is shocking what can contain asbestos.
If it contains asi then a paper mask is no use because the fibres will be released in the air and coat everything in site. No need to wory about the asbestos killing you, if you try to sand it, you will make so much mess your mother will kill you on her return. Do not contemplate it any further, a plaster skim, or over boarding, is the only solution. Best to remove is with a steamer but this method will blow the plaster underneath, so as others have said the only way really is a re-skim.
An normal DIY electric sander would take forever. You would need a belt sander really. The amount of dust would be close to what you would get taking a lath and plaster ceiling down!
Reskim or over board then reskim would be the only way to deal with this properly. The problem with reskimming is the skirting boards. Depending on the thickness of the artex and the relief of the raised bits there may not be enough top edge left on the skirting board to reskim without taking the skirting off first. No need to wory about the asbestos killing you,. Click to expand Nuts lmao, ummm, not sure what to do now as that part is smooth and the rest is artex.
Mum said that sanding it would take so so long, and to leave it how it is and just paint the room, but that 1 flat spot will now bother me forever. Why the hell didn't I try the sander behinde the door which hasn't been closed in about 10 years. Guess i'll leave the artex as is for now and just paint the room. Londondecca Active Member. Xtex is designed to remove artex. Hi there, Does anyone have any experience of sanding artex?
Steve Walker. I seam to recall someone in this group say you can buy a solution that dissolves artex. Glenn Halstead. I just scraped my kitchen artex off using a steam wall paper stripper and a scraper - dead easy.
Andrew Chivers. There is a product called X-Tex Textured coatings remover and it is water-based and doesnt burn your skin, doesnt smell and removes artex remarkbly well. Safe to say that whole tub went on about a quarter of one ceiling and I quickly realised that what I'd actually bought was just a really expensive tub of skimming plaster. However, the skimming tools for applying it were a different story.
I've never actually tried to skim a ceiling, but legend has it that it's a difficult job getting a good finish. But this smooth roller and smoothing tool seemed to do the job without too much trouble. First up, you apply the plaster with the roller, then you smooth it out. It is still available today, but not particularly popular as an aesthetic choice among most homeowners. The internet will be able to offer all kinds of nearby private companies that specialise in this task, or ask your local council for advice.
Up until around the mids, asbestos was used to harden artex. It has never been officially outlawed, so if an artex wall or ceiling was installed after this date it is not a guarantee that it will be asbestos-free. My Artex is Cracking. What Should I Do? Sorry to sound like a broken record, but remember the asbestos concerns.
